Quote:| I get this impression from some conversations I have had in recent months that if a band is looking for a mainstream type of sound that it means they suck. i'm trying to figure this out... anyone wanna help shed some light on this? |

After reading a good 10 of the replies, I decided to just give you my opinion instead of reading everyone else's! There is nothing wrong with having a mainstream sound in my opinion, however, when a band does have that particular sound I like to know that they are genuine opposed to the bands that are just doing it b/c it's the "in" style, ya know? Kinda like the whole boyband thing of the late 90's. Yeah ok, I was a sheep. I was 11 or 12 when i started to listen to that bubble gum pop. They were all the same. They sounded alike, looked alike, and their songs always had very similar chord progressions and lyrics. With the almost death of bubble gum pop, screamo, pop-punk, emo, and punk seemed like a very contrasting alternative to the sugery sweetness of the late 90s. However, with that shift in musical tastes, the bands did the same thing. A reproduction of the same sound that is popular to appeal to the audience. It mostly comes down to one thing with most groups. MONEY! They reproduce the "in" sound to generate a fanbase and so they can roll in the dough. They just wanna cash in on what's hot at the moment before the music industry shifts yet again. I think that's what most people are referring to when they talk about bands who are wanting a mainstream sound to be somewhat of a joke. My personal opinion on the matter is that if they sound good, have good lyrics with some sort of depth, and I like them then I'm going to listen to it whether everyone else agrees with me or not. It does irk me when bands or musicians try to recreate themselves just to fit what the market is producing but I guess that's a whole nother topic!

yeah totlay get ya. For me the bottom line is do what yo udo cause its what YOU want todo ... as far as musical style goes. its fine to taylor your sound somewhat to allow yourself the chance to do it full time or whatever but "selling-out" is when you change who you are just for money. ;-)
